Development of an advanced data ingestion platform for a global
financial information and software company: Thomson Reuters
THE CHALLENGE
SSI was contracted to build a new data ingestion system
(which involved creating custom scripts and code) that
handles mass-input from data vendors. Data arrived in
different formats and uploads for some vendors were
inconsistent. Multiple vendors had legacy problems
with uploaded data including anomalies. In some cases
uploads amounted to multiple terabytes of data.
THE SOLUTION
A new automated framework Data Ingestion System
(DIS) was developed that automated the generation of
new data-feeds. Quality assurance involved verification
and validation of ingestion results. Based on client
licensing, the resultant file post-update was packaged
and distributable.
A client-side communicator application was also
developed that enabled Thomson Reuters' customers to
download and insert files in their databases.

THE CHALLENGE
Prior to the project, the MarketQA user interface
was suboptimal. The competition was far ahead of
Thomson Reuters in feature set and using newer
technologies with better, faster and more intuitive
user experiences. The company was aware of these
issues but was stymied in recreating the application
on newer technologies due to a lack of resources
and skill sets.
THE SOLUTION
SSI successfully architected and delivered an innovative
and easy-to-use .NET user interface which, apart from
being user-friendly, integrates and supports the legacy
application features. SSI built the application using .Net
Framework 2.0, C# 2005. The project took well over a
year to complete. SSI wound up taking the project lead.
More than five years after it debuted, it remains
Thomson Reuter's flagship product in quantitative
analytics.
